Citizen Initiatives for the Lake Oconee Community
Real change starts with citizens. Learn what a citizen initiative is, how you can take part, and explore the work currently underway across our community.
What Is a Citizen Initiative?
A Citizen's Initiative (CI) is a community-driven project proposed and managed by one or more Lake Oconee citizens. These initiatives allow citizens to directly contribute to the betterment of the community by identifying opportunities, defining solutions, and delivering results with support from the non-profit organization. The non-profit provides guidance, administrative support, coordination, and resource development to help turn citizen ideas into successful outcomes.
How Citizens Get Involved
Directors
Citizens who take the lead on a specific initiative. Directors are responsible for performing all tasks required to advance the project, including planning, coordination with partner organizations, documentation, facilitation of meetings, and overall project management. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about an issue and willing to commit the time and effort necessary to drive it forward.
Supporters
Citizens who lend their voice and presence to an initiative without taking on leadership responsibilities. Supporters demonstrate community backing by signing petitions, attending public meetings, providing input during planning sessions, and helping to show unified support when interfacing with county officials, GDOT, Georgia Power, developers, or other stakeholders.
Backers
Citizens who provide financial contributions to support initiatives when needed. Backers help bridge funding gaps, cover project expenses not met by grants, or support administrative costs. Contributions are voluntary and directed toward specific initiatives or the general operations of the non-profit.
